The Battle of New Orleans was fought on January 8, 1815, and stands as the final major engagement and greatest American land victory of the War of 1812. Paradoxically, the bloody conflict took place 15 days after the Treaty of Ghent had been signed on Christmas Eve, 1814, to officially end the war. Because news took weeks to travel across the Atlantic, neither side knew peace had been declared.
